Hand Spun Holidays

I got a few of these DIY ornaments at Michael's last week not really knowing what I would use them for but for $1.29 each, why not? Then I remembered that I have some of the first yarns I spun laying around. It's not really good for knitting but it's some of the first stuff I made. So I shoved it into the globes. Easy, cute and special. They will decorate my tree for years to come.

The Christmas Lights

One of my top five favorite things about this season is the Holiday lights at Columbus Circle. Back in College I did a Christmas in the City photo project and looking back on it now I wish I had focused solely on these lights. I can't explain it but something about then makes me so happy. I just absorb the light and carry it around me as my happy thought for like a week. I also always take a bunch of pictures and today I am sharing them with you. If you are ever in New York around Christmas stop by and see them yourself.

Christmas is coming!!!

I'm one of those obnoxious people who celebrates the Holiday all month long. I'd apologize but honestly, I'm not that sorry.

More pictures of leaves

I'm lucky enough to live in a building with a court yard. When I was younger I use to ( and who are we kidding, I still do) think of it as my own secret garden. Unfortunately my building also has a super who can't just let nature be. A day before he raked up all the pretty leaves I got some wonderful photos. Enjoy my farewell to fall:

Up in the Garden: Thanksgiving Edition!

So after the amazing surgery my mother preformed on my Mac two weeks ago ( she replaced the hard drive) the computer has broke. The good people at Apple are hopefully fixing it but it does limit the amount of access I have to the Internet. Lucky for me, I'm not a person who is addicted to technology and I have an iPhone so I can survive.

For those of you who don't already know, as the weather started to get colder I decided to break down the garden but I just could not bare to kill my tomato plant. It's my baby, raised from a seedling, I mean, how could I just dump it? Besides it had about 50 ripening tomatoes left on it so I brought it inside, set up a lamp and hoped for the best. Well it payed off, I know have ripe yellow pear tomatoes that I'll serve with my veggie plate for thanksgiving. As noted in a previous post, I have had some problems with caterpillars on this plant. Tonight I harvested some of the tomatoes and made a new discovery: a baby caterpillar living INSIDE one of the tomatoes! I know nothing about caterpillars how their life cycle so perhaps this is completely normal but I found myself fascinated by this little thing. On the one hand he is eating my tomatoes and I should hate him but on the other hand, he's so cute! After snapping some pictures I set him inside the tomato in the trash. I like to think he will survive there at least for a little while.

Killing Gladys

Last weekend I finally harvested my Halloween pumpkin, Gladys. Gladys was a great pumpkin and I'll miss her very much but her memory will live on in whatever I make with the purée I got from her insides and the Spicy Hot Pumpkin seeds I made.

The Halloween Trip to Salem

After months of waiting, years actually but months of planning, finally I was in Salem for Halloween! A lifelong dream of mine brought to life by my boyfriend. In truth we had been planning the trip since before we actually began dating. Both of us share an interest in the paranormal and wanted to see Salem at Halloween. I had two demands for this trip, the first that we go to the Salem Witch Museum and the second that we go on a haunted ghost tour. We stayed in Providence Rhode Island which is about an hour from Salem, with his brothers. The trip up was easy enough and it was the perfect weekend for Fall Foliage. The leave were BEAUTIFUL!!! I mean, really breath taking.

I had never been to Providence and only saw a bit on this trip but it was nothing like I imagined. I figured it would be all beachy and island like, like Cape Cod but it was more like a sleepy New England town. I know it's a coastal state but I never saw the ocean.

We arrived in Providence on Thursday night and hit Salem Friday. I had expected Salem to be crowded with loads of people but although there were people, it wasn't overly crowded. We walked picked up our tickets for the Witch Museum early for an afternoon entry and then walked around. We ducked in and out of some witch shops and down a main street with outside vendors. During the day we didn't see many people in costume but there was no shortage of Witch hats. I fought the urge to buy myself a hat since I had a pair of black cat ears to wear. We passed by the famous Hawthorne Hotel and the Witch Dungeon Museum which use to be a real Dungeon ( or was re-created to look like it, the plaque was un-clear on that). It was a cold but sunny day.

We headed back to The Salem Witch Museum in the afternoon for our showing. The Salem Witch Museum is more of a presentation of the history of the Salem Witch Trials. You are lead into a big room with life size dioramas on the walls depicting the events surrounding the trials. I've seen this about four different times over the years and I have to say it's about time for a touch up. Some of the mannequins are so decrepit that they look like something out of the new House of Wax movie. I also think the sounds and voices and dialogue could be updated. Then there is a whole second part to the tour about modern witch craft that was honestly a little creepy. As someone who studied and knows a bit about Wicca and paganism, I couldn't help but think to myself, "If this is the first image I had of this I would be creeped out." But all in all it was fun and I would recommend this museum to anyone visiting Salem.

The Ghost tour didn't start until 8 so after the museum we walked over to the Salem Cemetery. Salem is great cause you can walk everywhere. I love old cemeteries. Modern ones freak me out and make me sad but the old ones are so beautiful. I walked around taking pictures of head stones for a while. Then we decided to eat. We choose a restaurant we had passed by earlier called Rockafellas. Located on the ground floor of an almost 200 year old building, Rockafellas has a rich history that includes a stint as a bank and it still maintains a small vault that is now a private room you can dine in  (if you get lucky). The food was really good. I had my seasonal fave, Pumpkin Ravioli and a Salem Witch martini which was sooo good!

By the time we got done with dinner it was dark out and that is when Salem truly came alive. Everyone was in costume and we bumped in to Quagmire on our way to the ghost tour. I have to admit that over all the Ghost tour was not the best but I can tell our dear tour guide was really trying. He looked so tired that my boyfriend and I just assumed he was over worked for the Holiday season. The highlight of the tour was a surprise return to Rockafellas, where we heard a sad tale about a love triangle gone wrong and the ghosts that still haunt the building. By the time the Ghost tour was over we had done about three full loops around Salem and we were tired. And cold! While we were totally comfortable during the day, the temperature dropped substantially by night time and we both ended up buying extra sweatshirts for the tour. This would have been fine except while most of the stores sell super cheap, they jack the prices up at night. Next time we will bring our own extra shirts.

Over all the trip to Salem (by was of Providence) was great. On Saturday we went to a fondue restaurant called, The Melting Pot in downtown Providence. I love fondue and my boyfriend had never had it but we had a Mexican fondue that was amazing ad of course Chocolate fondue for dessert. Sunday, which was actually Halloween we didn't really do much. That was a shame since my boyfriend was a Ghostbuster for Halloween and he built his own proton pack.( I will do a blog post with pictures if this, it's really amazing) Monday before heading home, we hit up Boston and did a trolley tour. You can't do Boston in one day but we did out best to see as much as we could. The price of the Trolley included a short boat tour around the harbor which we took around sun set which was nice. Again, very cold but we were prepared this time. We did a quick loop through Quincey market just look (and buy some candles from Yankee Candle company) and ate some quick dinner and headed home.

The trip to New England was a blast and we are already talking about heading back in the spring to see more of Boston and perhaps do some whale watching. Over all, I say if you're going to visit Salem you should definitely go during the Fall so you can catch the leaves and some of the Halloween spirit.

Blogger to Blogger shout out

My dear friend Kelly Kramer over at Friendly Brown knits shares my obsession with the wonderful colors of Autumn leaves. She's got some truly awesome photos over here on her blog but I hope she won't mind if I steal a little bit of her thunder and share some of my pictures of leaves I took recently. Taken with the Hipstamatic App on my iPhone, the different lenses really make the colors pop. It makes me sad that the season is ending and there has already been snow on Long island. Fall is my favorite season and I hate to see it go.

I don't wanna let you go!!!!

I love craft swaps. I swap via Craftster.org and I really enjoying crafting for someone. I put a lot of time and effort into the items I make that person and I hope it brightens up their day when they get what I've made them. But every one in a while I'll make something so awesome that I kinda wanna keep it for myself.
Such was the dilemma with the Halloween Yo-Yo necklace...

The Yo-yo necklace is a favorite of mine. Originally posted on craftster by waitf4fiji I instantly fell in love with it. I'm not a sewer but I do have a bunch of fat quarters of fabric so for me these necklaces are perfect. They are fast and fun and look great. I decided for this swap I would use some of my Halloween fabric to make my swap partner a Halloween Yoyo necklace. Yoyo necklaces are super quick, you can make one in an hour though mine took longer since I was also crafting other things for the swap. But when I finished I was so proud of it and so in love with it that I didn't wanna let it go. I did and my partner loved it but a small selfish part if me wishes I had kept it. I'm currently participating in the Craftster stocking swap and I'm planning a Yoyo necklace for this swap as well. Someday I'll get around to making one for myself, someday...

Up in the Garden"I knew it!!!"

It's what I screamed yesterday morning when I discovered these on my Tomato plant... These are Moth cocoons!!! Ever since I brought the plant inside (it's 4 1/2 feet tall and full of tomatoes, I wasn't about to let the weather kill it) something just hasn't been right. There were signs, little black crusties on leaves ( I now know there were droppings) and when I returned from my trip to Salem over Halloween weekend I discovered some of the tomatoes had been gnawed on. I found two of these little buggers plus a newly hatched moth chillin on his former cocoon. I let the moth go outside but I flushed the two cocoons. Usually I would have been thrilled to see nature in action but moths are evil and they ate my tomatoes!

All that Brass...

So I have picked a new collectible hobby. It's Brass. A couple of years ago my grandmother died and I was offered her brass horse piece. It was a piece I use to play with as a child and though my grandmother and I were never really close, I did want it. I love it. I have no idea how old it is but something about it makes me happy and so for my birthday I decided to ad to my collection. I bought a small piece of three Cocker spaniel puppies on Etsy. So since then, I have spent hours on Etsy looking up vintage brass stuff. I like the idea of owning something with a history and giving it a new home. So in honor of my new obsession I have made a Treasury. Take a look and hopefully you'll get a better sense of how and why Brass has made a place in my heart.

Up in the Garden: the last Harvest

So as my beloved Autumn drifts in and the Summer heads into the subset, my garden settles down. I was so proud of my garden this year and am sad to see it go. I've decided the Lavender bush will come indoors but the rest will come down this weekend. Yesterday I harvested the last of the tomatoes, 2 Radishes and a Green Pepper. I feel bad about cutting down the plants cause they are still doing well but the weather is going to take them if I don't and I think if they have to die I should be the one to do it. Here are some pictures of the latest Harvest...
